When the local Lake Kariba market describes this vessel as a "houseboat" think more "luxury twin engined yacht" than static river-side hulk. Matusadona is the last word in what we would term a river cruiser. Built to exacting standards by the owner of a beautiful camp on the banks of the Zambezi River - and who also owns a South African vineyard - guests' can be assured of the full Monty when it comes to food, wine and service. Sleeping 6 guests in total luxury, guests on this brand new yacht are cared for by four staff.
Typically the vessel cruises the shores of this huge lake, elephant-spotting and observing the plethora of local land and marine wildlife from the comfort of her upper deck jacuzzi. Opportunities for game fishing and canoe expeditions with a guide abound although swimming amongst the hippos is not encouraged.
For the ultimate 'package', guests may charter Matusadona for a few days and combine with a stay at the owner's Zambezi River camp, culminating in a three night trip on Rohan Vos' elegant period steam train to Durban. A few images of the owner's luxurious camp and Rovos Rail's train can be found in the yacht slideshow.
For students of etymology, she takes her name from Matuzviadonha Hills, a range of rugged mountains in Zimbabwe..
